Sapo Concho de Puerto Rico (PRican Crested Toad)

I attended a talk at the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge on reptiles and amphibians. Below are my notes on the sapo concho from the talk and a scan of an informative card on the toad.

Concho: (depending on where you are from) rustic, country bumpkin, the remains, such as in an empty bottle. The expression vivir a concho means to live life to the fullest, suggested from the fact that an empty wine bottle means you enjoyed the full bottle.

No clue what concho means en Puerto Rico, buuuuuut, I'll hypothesize that because the toad looks like it is smiling when viewed face on, that it's a happy toad, living life to the fullest. Thus I'll say the literal translation to sapo concho is "toad that enjoys life."

La diferencia entre sapo y rana es que el sapo puede dejar el agua después de hacerse adulto para vivir fuera del agua en la tierra – las ranas siempre requieren agua.

Sapo Concho – parece que esta sonriendo – marron negro a amarilla/olivia; su sonido es ka-ka-ka bien rapido, not gua-gua-gua nor gu-gu-gu; una vez que pone sus huevos, dentro de 24 horas los crios salen de los huevos; dentro de 20 dias hace su metamorfosis.
